The soil and the grapes:
A healthy soil with diverse soil life allows the vines to thrive optimally. We create this basis by working in harmony with nature. So the decision for us to work according to EU ecological guidelines since 2009 was obvious. The grapes for the Gewurtraminer come from the Dürkheimer Abtsfronhof site. This more than 1,000-year-old site was once owned by the Benedictine monastery in Limburg, and through a marriage in 1823 became the sole property of the Fitz family. The vineyard is located in the heart of Bad Dürkheim, is surrounded by a sandstone wall and thus offers the optimal conditions for a special terroir with an extraordinary microclimate. The vines grow on loamy, sandy soil with a high mineral content. The subsoil contains limestone from the Tertiary.
The grapes for this bouquet wine were harvested when they were perfectly ripe. Since the aromas are found in the skin of the grapes, among other things, it is of great importance that the skin is intact at the time of harvest. A maceration time of 10 hours was used for an optimal aroma yield. The controlled, cooled 100% fermentation in stainless steel tanks was stopped to preserve the residual sweetness.
Scent of roses and lychee. Pleasant spiciness on the palate (laurel and black pepper), elegance with a perfect sweetness.
Residual sugar: 55.4 g/l
Acid: 5.3 g/l
VDP. PREDICATE WINERY
As a founding member of the VDP association, focus at Fitz-Ritter is on Riesling from the best vineyards. The wines are predominantly dry and clearly reflect the typical character of each provenance. Full-bodied and spicy, delicate and fine – the wines from each vineyard show great diversity. Sweet predicate wines round off the portfolio. The vineyards provide ideal conditions for the winery to grow Burgundy varieties. Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris vines thrive in limestone-studded clay soil and bring full-bodied, well balanced white wines.
The red wine varietals are predominantly planted in sandy soil. Following open mash fermentation, the wines, in particular the elegant Pinot Noirs, are matured for a term of 15 to 18 months in Barrique barrels made from oak of various origins.
